Black History Month
As part of Black History month, Canvey Junior School looked at different topics across the year groups. Year 3 investigated sportspeople’s contribution to history and looked at significant individuals, discussing their contributions to society. Year 4 looked at Katherine Johnson and Mae Jemison and investigated how black women were underrepresented in space programs and how they overcame tremendous difficulties to achieve their goals and aid the furthering of scientific knowledge. Year 5 looked at the issue of slavery, which crossed with their history teaching of the British Empire. They discussed slavery of the past up to the present day and looked at injustice and change for the future. Finally, Year 6 looked at the Windrush generation and examined the topic of journeys and how people felt leaving their homes and coming to a different country. They looked at how society accepted people from different cultures and how difficult it was for the Windrush generation to be valued and treated equally in their new country.
