Geography

At Canvey Junior Schoo,l we teach our Geography curriculum through Primary Connected Geography (Collins. David Weatherly) as our main programme of study.  Plans are provided by the Collins scheme of work and are edited by the teachers in order to ensure the lesson is productive and the children make progress. We develop the topics every year so that children build on prior learning. Children of all abilities can develop their skills and knowledge in each topic and we offer them increasing challenges as they move up the school.

Each year group has one Geography topic per term. This works alongside our History curriculum which is taught the second half of each term. Geography teaches an understanding of places, the human and physical processes which shape them, and the people who live in these environments.

Through their work in Geography, children learn about their local area and compare their life in this area with that in other regions in the United Kingdom and in the rest of the world.

They learn how to draw and interpret maps and they develop the skills of research, investigation, analysis and problem solving. Through their growing knowledge and understanding of Human Geography, children gain an appreciation of life in other cultures.
